The Apoena Network is an initiative that connects researchers from different areas of knowledge with the aim of strengthening scientific collaboration between Brazil and Germany. The network values hospitality, diversity and synergy, seeking to promote co-operation between the two countries. The members, as part of the Brazilian Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) diaspora in Germany, are committed to welcoming Brazilian researchers, building institutional bridges and widely publicising their work.
During the process of choosing the name, the group considered several acronym options that would represent the diaspora of Brazilian researchers in Germany, such as RePeBA, DiPeBA and REPBA. However, none of these alternatives reflected the essence and ideals of the network.
The name ‘Apoena’ came about after several such attempts to create acronyms and was inspired by the Tupi-Guarani language, meaning ‘he who sees farthest’. This name reflects the network’s mission to identify opportunities and expand scientific knowledge through co-operation. The choice of name symbolises the Apoena Network’s vision of going beyond, connecting people and fostering partnerships that broaden horizons in the scientific field.
